Salus Populi Romani
The icon is based on Pope Francis' favorite image
of the Theotokos
«Salus Populi Romani»
An encaustic icon of the Virgin, kept in the specially built Paolina Chapel in the Roman Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. The icon is especially revered by the townspeople and is the main icon of the Theotokos in Rome.
Tradition attributes the authorship of the icon to the Apostle Luke. Art historians date the icon to the 6th century.
The name «Salvation of the Roman people» (Santa Maria «Salus populi romani»)
was given because it was this icon that St. Gregory the Dialogist carried in a procession through Rome in 590 during a raging pestilence,
which then ceased.
